Toby, Daniel

Daniel Toby was a Pequot Revolutionary War veteran who served in Colonel Herman Swift’s 2nd Connecticut Regiment under Captain Joseph Wright from January 13, 1781 until his discharge in December 5, 1781.  His next appearance in the historical record was in April of 1819, as a signatory to a petition for the appointment of a new overseer.  He, along with 24 others from the Mashantucket Pequot community, petitioned the New London County Court for the appointment of Captain Eneas Morgan as overseer.  Within a year Daniel Toby and his wife fell on difficult times as evidenced by a bill from Charles Lathrop of  Lebanon in January of 1820.  Lathrop provided care for the couple for one week with Caleb Stark continuing to provide necessaries for another five weeks. The town petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly for reimbursement for the boarding and nursing of Daniel Toby, as well as bills associated with care provided by Dr. Erastus Osgood.  The overseer to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe settled Daniel Toby’s bill with the Town of Lebanon.
