Whitman, Solomon, 1710 - 1803
Solomon Whitman was the son of Rev. Samuel Whitman and Sarah Stoddard of Farmington, Connecticut. Trained as a cobbler, he decided to dedicate his life to farming a civic service instead. Early in his life, Whitman was appointed magistrate and began to practice law. He was elected town clerk in 1776, a position he held until 1780, and in 1769 elected to the first Judge of Probate for Farmington (1769-1784). From 1751-1792, Whitman served as a justice of the peace. In 1751 he also was elected to the General Assembly, where he remained until 1767.
