Dick Sowas, Sarah

In the early 1770s, Sarah Sowas, alias Sarah Dick, resided on the Eastern Pequot reservation with her husband Richard Sowas, the son of Blind Jacob.  After the death of schoolmaster Edward Nedson and prior to the construction of a new schoolhouse, the Eastern Pequot school was held in Richard and Sarah’s house.

Her husband Richard enlisted on February 6, 1777 in Durkee’s 4th Connecticut regiment, Hydes’ company out of Norwich and was killed in Pennsylvania when the British took Fort Mifflin.  Sarah and their children received some benefits from his service. A decade later Sarah Sowas was a signator on a 1788 Eastern Pequot petition requesting new overseers.
