Petition of John Awassamug to the Massachusetts General Court

To the Governour and Deputy Governour, Assistants, and Deputies in General Court Assembled at Boston, May 7, 1684

.

The humble petition of John Awassamug, Sr. (Indian of Natick) humbly sheweth that whereas he formerly sold his hereditary lands now within the bounds of Medfield,[1] Mendham, and Sherborn, reserving only about one thousand acres of land in the midst (lying between those English towns) to himself, but he, being now disposed to sell the same, as it lies bounded by the town of Dedham on the south side thereof unto such as will amongst the said towns or other Englishmen as will buy the same, and he, understanding that now can without dispute buy and purchase the same but by order of the General Court.  To shew his ready submission to the laws of this jurisdiction, he, in most humble manner, prays that with the approbation and good liking of this Honored Court, he may dispose of, sell, and alienate the said land in whole or in parcels as he liketh unto any or all of the said towns, or to any other English person or persons also as he thinks good.

.

And your petitioner shall ever pray, etc.,
