Amos, Elisha , 1736 -
Elisha Amos (Ianoxoo) was the son of Amos Ianoxoo from Chilmark, Massachusetts. Around 1736, he first married Rebecca Suncasnin of Mashpee, but she separated from him shortly thereafter. By the early 1760s, he was living with Rebecca, a slave belonging to Cornelius Bassett, who many claimed was his wife. From his propensity for suing others and being sued himself for trespass, arson, stealing, and fraud, Amos has been called "the most controversial figure in the Vineyard Indians' history."
