Bill for a Public Act to Protect the Wood on the Lands of the Mohegan Indians

An Act to Protect the Wood on the Lands of the Mohegan Tribe of Indians in the Town of Montville and County of New London

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened that every person, who shall take or draw any wood from the land of the Mohegan Tribe of Indians in the Town of Montville in New London  County or from the land of any Indian or Indians belonging to said Tribe  without the permission of the overseer or overseers of said tribe, shall forfeit the sum of five dollars for every load of wood so taken or drawn away from said land, whether the same contains more or less than half a cord, to be recovered by the overseer or overseers of said tribe1 for the use and benefit of said tribe in an action of debt brought on this Senate! And the team used in drawing wood as aforesaid shall be liable for said penalty and shall be liable to be attached and held to respond the judgment for penalty [ illegible ] in any action brought on this statute for the penalty therein inflicted, in the same manner as the property of the person guilty of a breach of this statute.
