Petition of Benjamin Allen to the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives

To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

The memorial of the subscriber humbly shews that he was appointed one of the Guardians of the of the Christiantown Indians, so-called, within the Town of Tisbury on the 11th of March 1805 and continued in that office until June 13th 1813, for which services, he has never received any compensation from any quarter whatever, no not one cent.  He now prays Your Honorable Body to order him such sum in payment as you may think is just and right.  Your memorialist farther states that his want of health has prevented him from making this application before this, as he had intended to been before you in his own person but is now, for the same reason, prevented of having that honor.  Your memorialist farther states that Edmund Cottle was appointed as his first colleague Guardian, and after his decease,1 his son, John Cottle, was appointed, who is also deceased.2  The services in the first was arduous, as there were many disputes among them, owing to their females marrying Negroes, whom they did not wish to have any rights to their lands, but we were after a while to arrange all these matters satisfactory.  I now close not having a doubt that you will allow me such sum as you may think is just and right.

And as in duty bound will ever pray,

Tisbury, December 29, 1845
