Resolution of the Connecticut General Assembly upon the Petition of Esther Pegee and Others Requesting Leave to Sell Indian Land

Upon the Petition of Esther Pegee, Josiah Horsecoat, Anne Horsecoat, and Elizabeth Horsecoat, all of Mohegan Tribe of Indians, shewing to this Assembly that the petitioner Esther Pegee is the owner and possessor of a certain lot of land lying in said Mohegan and contains about twenty-five acres, bounded easterly by the River Thames, northerly, westerly, and southerly by Indian lands; and that said Anne, Josiah, Elizabeth Horsecoat are the surviving heirs of their late brother Samuel Horsecoat, deceased, and, as such, are the owners of a certain lot of land lying and being in said Mohegan containing twenty-two acres, bounded by the River Thames easterly, northerly, and westerly by Indian lands and southerly by lands of said Esther, that said Esther hath become aged and infirm and is unable to support herself by labor, and that the rents of her other lands are not sufficient for her maintenance and that said Esther's lot, above described, is detached and distant from any and all other lands belonging to her and is wholly unfenced, and that said lot of land belonging to said Josiah, Anne, and Elizabeth, above described, is distant and separate from any and all other lands belonging to them and is wholly unfenced, and that sometime in the month of August 1805, the dwelling house then owned by said Josiah, Anne, and Elizabeth by accident took fire and was entirely consumed with its contents1 and praying that said Esther may have liberty to sell her said lot of land under the direction of the Honorable William Hillhouse or such other person as this Assembly might see fit to appoint. And that said Josiah, Anne, Elizabeth have liberty to sell their said lot, above described, under the direction of the Honorable William Hillhouse or2 such other person as this Assembly might see fit to appoint, that they might thereby be enabled to erect a shelter from the inclemencies of the approaching season as per petition on file dated October 3, 1807

Resolved by this Assembly that said Esther have liberty, and liberty is hereby granted her to sell her said lot of land under the direction of the Honorable William Hillhouse, Esq., and be it further resolved that said Josiah, Anne, and Elizabeth have liberty, and liberty is hereby granted them to sell their said lot of land3 in said petition described under the direction of the Honorable William Hillhouse, Esq.
