Quincy, Josiah, 1772 - 1864

Josiah Quincy was the son of Josiah Quincy II and Abigail Phillips of Boston, Massachusetts.  A graduate of Harvard College (1709), he was admitted to the bar in 1793.  Five years later, Boston's Selectmen appointed him Town Orator.  In 1800, he was elected to the School Committee. A leader of the Federalist Party, Quincy was a member of the Massachusetts Senate (1804-1805), a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1805-1813), Boston's mayor (1823-1828), President of Harvard College (1829-1845), and the president of the Massachusetts Senate in 1842.
