Major Timothy Hart Root was the son of Timothy Root and Mary Langdon of Farmington, Connecticut.  He was the collector for Farmington and served as cornet in the 4th Company of Gad Cowles 7th Regiment Cavalry.  He later was promoted to captain in Stephen L. Avery's Third Troop of the Second Regiment.  In 1806 he purchased two acres of land from Uriah and Lucy Cesar.  His father's will provided him with a dozen parcels of land in Farmington, including the Root homestead, land west of the Indian Grant, and the land on which the Mossuck barn stood.
