Nowell, Samuel, 1634 - 1688

Samuel Nowell was the son of Increase Nowell and Parnell Parker of Charlestown, Massachusetts.  After graduation from Harvard (1653), he served as chaplain under Josiah Winslow in King Philip’s War and was a combatant in the Great Swamp Fight.  He later replaced Joseph Rowlandson as the army’s minister the following February.  Nowell was elected Commissioner of the United Colonies (1682-1686), treasurer of the colony (1685-1685), and served as assistant to Massachusetts General Court from 1680-1686).  He traveled to England in 1687 to seek a new colonial charter and died in London.  Sibley, Sketches of Graduates of Harvard University.
