Whitney, Shubael, 1772 - 1852

Shubael Whitney was born August 15, 1772 in Preston, Connecticut, the son of Asa and Sarah Whitney.  He married Sally Mitchel of nearby Groton, Connecticut on June 25, 1795 and the couple would have at least nine children over the course of their long marriage.  The family lived in northern portion of Groton, not far from the Mashantucket reservation.  Shubael was a carpenter by trade and during his residence in North Groton was paid by the overseers of both the Mashantucket and Eastern Pequot tribes for building a number of coffins as well as repairing houses on the reservation.  Census records indicate that he removed from Connecticut to Mount Pleasant, New York by 1840, and Wadsworth, Ohio, by 1850, where he died two years later, on September 5, 1852.
