Sumner, John

John Sumner (1705-1787) was the son of Edward Sumner of Roxbury, Massachusetts.  After graduating from Harvard College in 1723 as a minister, he removed to Edgartown around 1748.  Sumner was appointed judge of the Dukes County Court of Common Pleas in 1761 and served until the Revolution.  He also was one of the Guardians of the Indians on Martha's Vineyard.   Sumner was the brother-in-law of Rev.
