John Newman was the pastor of the Church of Christ from Edgartown, Massachusetts. After his dismissal in 1758, he became Colonel of the Militia and in 1761 a justice of the Court of Sessions and Common Pleas. Banks, History of Martha’s Vineyard, 154-155.
