Smith, Richard, Jr., - 1692

Captain Richard Smith was the son of Richard Smith, Sr. of Wickford, Rhode Island.  He served as constable of Wickford and operated his father’s trading post there from 1662 to 1692.  After the post was destroyed during King Philip’s War, Smith rebuilt it and petitioned the United Colonies for compensation.  He owned property at Setauket, Long Island, Wickford, Bristol, Newport, including Atherton Company lands, as well as eight slaves.  Smith traveled to London in 1670 to bring the Company’s problems to the notice of Charles II.  Martin, Profits in the Wilderness, 64-65.  Schultz and Tougias, King Philip’s War, 251.
