Fletcher, Benjamin, 1640 - 1703

Benjamin Fletcher was the son of William Fletcher and Abigail Vincent of London, England.  He became an officer in the Irish cavalry and was later commissioned a captain in Princess Anne’s regiment, the Portsmouth Mutineers.  In 1691 Fletcher accepted the position of governor of New York and Pennsylvania, which he held from 1692-1698.  In that position, he negotiated a renewed alliance with the Five Nations.  Under charges of corruption, he returned to England where he was merely admonished.  Fletcher retired to Dublin, where he died.  ANBO.
