Billings, Stephen, 1751 - 1798

Captain Stephen Billings (December 8, 1751-January 29, 1798) was the son of Stephen Billings and Bridget Grant of North Groton, Connecticut and the husband of Cynthia Hewitt.  He entered the War of the Revolution as a sergeant in 1775 and was at the Battle of Bunker Hill.  Billings was captain in Colonel Heman Swift's  Second Connecticut Regiment, fighting at Stony Point and serving until the end of the war.  He lived near Center Groton.  Billings was Groton's representative to the Connecticut General Assembly (1774, 1778, 1781, 1787, 1788, 1791).
 
In May 1788, the Legislature appointed Billings and Charles Hewitt of Stonington as Overseers to the Mashantucket Pequot and Eastern Pequot communities, respectively.  Avery, History of Ledyard, 101.  Daughters of the American Revolution, Lineage Book (1897), 93.  Stark, Groton, Conn., 86-88.  Acts and Resolves (Connecticut, 1788),  460.
