Assowetough

Known to the English as Betty, Assowetough was the daughter of John Sassamon and possibly the daughter of the Pequot Sachem Sassacus.  Wife of an Indian named Felix, the couple had at least one child, Mercy, although it is possible a Thomas Felix that is found in the historical record may have been a son as well.  In 1673 Assowetough and Felix acquired over eighty acres of land from Benjamin Tuspaquin and John Sassamon.  Six years later, they added to that amount by receiving all of Sassamon's landholdings by an order from the Governor of Plymouth Colony.  Assowetough subsequently transferred all her property rights to her daughter, Mercy.  Pierce, Indian History, Biography, and Genealogy, 214.
