Petition of Barnard C. Marchant, Guardian of the Chappaquiddick Indians, to the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives

To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of Massachusetts in General Court Assembled                 

The undersigned, Guardian of the Indians and People of Color resident at Chappaquiddick and Christiantown in Dukes County, respectfully represents to Your Honorable Body that Asa Peters of the latter tribe is now sick and has been for the last four years, and unable to provide for two motherless children.  That three orphan children under the age of eight years are dependent upon the aid they may receive from the State for their support.  That the Legislature of 1868,1 allowed the Guardian the sum of $200 (or so much thereof as should be necessary) as aid in the support of said Peters and two children, and the three orphans, all belonging to the Christiantown tribe, and that the said Legislature also allowed the undersigned the sum of $104 for the support of the two schools, Resolve Chap 32.68, making in the aggregate the sum of $304.

Wherefore, your petitioner prays Your Honorable Body to allow him the said sum of $304 for the purposes aforesaid.

And as in duty bound will ever pray,
