Bassett, Leander, 1810 -

Leander Bassett (October 15, 1810-after 1870) was the son of James Bassett and Esther Sharper of Farm Neck, Edgartown, Massachusetts.  He married Huldah Jeffers of the Gay Head Indian community on July 25, 1832, and the couple had at least four children, Esther (b. 1847), Bethia (b. 1849), Julia Ann (b. 1841), and Moses (b. 1845).  Bassett was a seaman and farmer.  In 1860, he was living at Gay Head, owning five acres of land and five cattle.  He remained at Gay Head at least until 1870.  Pease, Pease Report, 53
