Porter, John, 1735 - 1804

Captain John Porter was the son of Ebenezer and Anna Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, and the husband of Mary Barnes.  He served in William Wadsworth's Company from Farmington in the Connecticut Militia in 1757.  Porter was on a committee for the Connecticut General Assembly on Tunxis Indian affairs in 1784.  Two years later, the Connecticut General Assembly appointed him a guardian of the Tunxis.  He held that position until his death in 1804, even though he was living in New Hartford, Oneida by 1799.  Porter was replaced as guardian by Ezekiel Cowles, Jr.
