Wolcott, Oliver, 1760 - 1833

Oliver Wolcott (January 11, 1760-June 1833) was the son of Oliver Wolcott and Laura Collins of Litchfield, Connecticut.  A graduate of Yale College (1778), he was admitted to the bar in 1781 and removed to Hartford.  Wolcott served as state comptroller for Connecticut (1788-1789), auditor of the federal Treasury (1789-1791), comptroller (1791-1795), and, succeeding his mentor, Alexander Hamilton, secretary (1795-1800).  After his federal service, Wolcott removed to New York City and became a partner in the Litchfield China Trading Company and president of the Merchants Bank.  Returning to Connecticut, he was elected governor in 1817, a position he held for ten years.  ANBO  Image Courtesy Yale University Art Gallery
