Cojonoquant

Cojonoquant was the eldest of Mascus’s sons, thus brother to Miantonomo, Yotash, and Pessicus, nephew of Canonicus, and cousin to Quequakanewett and Scuttup.  He was also the father of Quanopen, Sunkeejunasuc, and Ashamattan. Cojonoquant was an ineffectual leader of the Narragansetts.  His frequent use of alcohol made him a prime target for land adventuring franchises, such as the Atheron Company, the Pettaquamscutt Purchasers, and the Misquamicut Purchasers.  From 1657 to 1662 he either sold or leased large tracts of land in Namcook (North Kingstown), Pettaquamscutt, Conanicut Island, and other parcels along Narragansett Bay.  Campell and LaFantasie, Sachems and Sanaps, 22, 68.  LaFantasie, The Correspondence of Roger Williams, 493.
