Gay, Thomas, 1800 - 1848

Dr. Thomas Woodward Gay was born July 11, 1800 in North Stonington, Connecticut, the son of Jedidiah and Dorothy Gay.  He married Angelina Brewster on November 6, 1826  and the couple had one child, Fanny Angelina Gay.  The 1830 Federal Census for Preston, CT enumerated Thomas Gay as the head of a household of five.  In 1838 Thomas W. Gay was made a member of the Medical Society of the state of Connecticut.  As early as 1826, Dr. Gay began providing medical services to the members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.  And while he was not the only physician to care for the Mashantucket community, he did consistently attend to their needs throughout the 1830s, treating among others, Theodosia Deshon, Amy George Daniels, Hannah Miller, and James Sunsamon.  Dr. Thomas Gay last appears in the overseer’s records in 1842.

Thomas Gay died in Preston, Connecticut on July 8, 1848 at the relatively young age of 47, just several days shy of his 48thbirthday.  He is buried in Brewster Neck Cemetery in that town.
