No Man's Land (Cappoaquit)

Cappoaquit is an island off the southwestern coast of Martha's Vineyard, presently known as No Man's Land or Nomans Land, which may have been derived from the name of a sachem who had an influence there, Tequenoman,  Cappoaquit was visited by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602 and named Martha's Vineyard.  It later was called Hendrick Christiensen's Eyland in 1616, and by 1666, Isle of Mann, and Nomans Land.  It was placed under the jurisdiction of New York in 1683 and then Massachusetts in 1691.  Currently, it is in the town of Chilmark, Massachusetts.  Banks, The History of Martha's Vineyard, Vol. 2.
