Bourne, Shearjashub, 1643 - 1718

Shearjashub Bourne was born April 21, 1643, the son of the Rev. Richard Bourne.   Shearjashaub, along with his father, was instrumental in reaffirming the Mashpee's  land rights.  The fruits of his efforts are not only referred to by the Mashpee community in subsequent petitions but are etched in stone, literally. The headstone of Shearjashub Bourne reads, in part, "He was a virtuous righteous & merciful man and a great friend to ye Indians precious in ye sight of ye Lord id ye death of this saint".
