Hancock, John, 1737 - 1793

John Hancock was the son of John and Mary Hancock of Braintree, Massachusetts.  After graduating from Harvard College (1784), he became a prominent businessman in Boston and a leading member of the Patriot cause in Massachusetts.  He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1780-1785, 1787-1793).  John Singelton Copley portrait of Hancock (c. 1772) courtesy of the Massachusetts Historical Society through Wikipedia.
