Todd, Jonathan, Rev., 1713 - 1791

Jonathan Todd (Yale 1732) was the son of Jonathan Todd and Sarah Morrison of New Haven, Connecticut.  He removed to East Guilford, Connecticut (presently Madison, Connecticut) to become the town’s minister in 1734, a position he held until his death.  The East Guilford meeting house, where Todd preached, was located near Tuxisshoag Pond, where Natives of mixed tribe and race lived. It is unclear what Todd’s interpretation of local Indian affairs might have been; however, his will is noteworthy for containing the passage, “I have long been convinced in my own mind that the enslaving of Africans brought from Africa or those born in this country is unjust; and it is one of the sins of the land, and I would endeavor to free my estate from the cry of such a sin against it.”  Dexter, Biographical Sketches of Yale Graduates
