Squinn, Phebe, 1770 - 1839

Phebe Squinn Wamsley was the daughter of a man named Wamsley and Lydia Tuspaquin, and a descendant of the Wampanoag leader Massasoit.  She married first Silas Rosier, a member of the Mashpee community and had two sons Martin and John.  After Silas' loss at sea, she married Brister Gould and had several children: Betsey (1797), Lydia (1799), Jane (1801), Ruby (1803), Melinda (1805), Zerviah (1807), and Benjamin (1809). In 1816, Phebe and her sister Zerviah unsuccessfully petitioned the Massachusetts General Court for the ability to sell their late mother's interests in the ancestral land in Fall River to pay her debts.  By 1825 she was on the Town of Middleborough's pauper accounts.  F. Apthorp Foster, Vital Records of Abington, Massachusetts to the Year 1850 (Boston, MA: Stanhope Press, 1912), 285.  236.  Resolves of the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Boston: Dutton and Wentworth, 1828), 236.
