Root, Mary, 1727 - 1797

Mary Root (1727-October 15, 1797) was the eldest child of Joseph Root, Jr. and Hannah Wadsworth of Farmington, Connecticut.  After the death of her father in 1741, she inherited property worth over two thousand pounds, including five acres at Pequabuck Meadow.  As an unmarried woman, Mary spent close to thirty years living with the family of lawyer Solomon Whitman, producing textiles, maintaining the household, and helping take care of the children.  Her name appears as a witness on several legal documents produced by Whitman.
