Mayhew, Paine

Paine Mayhew (October 31, 1677-May 8, 1761), the son of Matthew Mayhew and Mary Skiffe of Edgartown, Massachusetts, became a lawyer from Chilmark, Massachusetts.  He was appointed to the Court of Common Pleas for Dukes County in 1713, succeeding Thomas Mayhew and holding the position until 1729.  Mayhew was also Judge of Probate from 1718 to 1733 and was one of the Indian agents for the Island.  The Gay Head sent in a protest against him and William Hunt in 1749 for leasing 900 acres of tribal land and ordering the Indians off of their property.  Find A Grave.
