Mayhew, John, 1652 - 1689

Reverend John Mayhew (1652-1688/9) was the son of Thomas Mayhew, Jr. and Jane Paine of Edgartown, Massachusetts.  At age 30, he continued the missionary work of his grandfather on Martha's Vineyard.  Banks indicated that Mayhew's ministry was "generally successful."  However, it was during this time that an Antipedobaptist sect caused a schism in the community.   Nonetheless, from 1682-1686, he was paid by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.
