Levett, Christopher, 1586 - 1630
Christopher Levett, the son of York merchant Percival Levett, was a member of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of York who became an explorer in and promoter of American colonial ventures. Levett was a member of the Council for New England and received a grant of 6,000 acres of land in Maine. In 1623 he began a year-long trip to New England, of which he later documented in his publication A Voyage into New-England (London, 1628). After service in the Cadiz Expedition of 1625, Levett briefly, returned to Maine in 1630 but died on his return to England.
