Cockapatana, - 1731

Cockapatana was a Pootatuck who succeeded Chusamuch as sachem of their community.  Cockapatana had at least one son, Waskawakes (Tom Indian).  Through land deeds from 1684 to 1711, Cockapatana and sometimes others with him sold parcels of Native land to colonists.  In many instances, they were co-negotiated with Ansantaway, another Pootatuck leader.

After his death in 1731, Cockapanta was followed by Gideon MawehuOrcut, Old Town of Derby, xxxv/xl. John F. Wilbur, The Scaticook Indians of Kent, Connecticut (MS Thesis, Danbury State College, 1966, 35.  Pearce, Native and Colonial Mapping, 269, 287, 288-92
