Griswold, Matthew , 1714 - 1799

Matthew Griswold (March 25, 1714, Lyme-April 28, 1799) son of John Griswold and Hannah Lee of Lyme, Connecticut, and the husband of Ursula Wolcott, the daughter of Governor Roger Wolcott.  Griswold was admitted to the bar of New London in 1742 and began a law practice in his hometown.  He was appointed King's Attorney the following year and held that position until 1776.  He served as Deputy to the Governor's Council (1748, 1751-1759), Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court (1765-1869, Chief Justice, 1769-1784), Deputy Governor (1769-1784), Governor (1784-1786) and President of the Supreme Court of Errors (1784-1789). With relation to Indian affairs, Griswold served on the committee that planned a highway through Mohegan lands (1750).  Four years later, he was appointed as overseer to the Niantic in Lyme, Connecticut and in 1758 to the Mohegan, a position he held until 1769.  In 1764, Griswold served on a committee with regard to the Mohegan Case.  IP 1.2.92, 93, 97, 99, 175, 292, 294, 296
