Gimbee, Moses

Moses Gimbee was the son of Cesar Gimbee and Patience Lawrence of the Hassanamisco community at Grafton, Massachusetts.  Around the start of the 19th century, he and his brother Cesar moved to Worcester, while leasing out their Hassanamisco property out through tribal guardians to non-Indian renters. After the division of their parents' estate, the two brothers in 1801 petitioned the General Court for the right to sell the rights to Hassanamisco land that they inherited from their mother.  Yet, they retained the interest rights in the Hassanamisco Indian trust.  Around 1805, Moses found himself in growing debt, the settling of which required tribal guardians to reduce his interest payments. In 1817, he married Zona Leonard and had two children, Moses Leander and Elizabeth Lawrence.  Mandel, Tribe, Race, History, 23, 63-64.  Gould, Contested Places, 211-219.
