Conet, Jesse (1808)

Jesse Conet (or Cowit) was a member of the Herring Pond Indian community.  In 1799, his daughter Mary married Darbey Barnes, a man who came to Plymouth Mass from Newfoundland.  In that marriage record, Jesse is called a man of color who came to Plymouth from Barnstable.  Nine years later, in 1808, he signed a petition to the Massachusetts General Court, protesting another petition that advanced positions contrary to the interests of the Herring Pond and Black Ground Indians.  1808.01.28.00.  Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 (Plymouth), Ancestry.
