Butler, Samuel, 1639 - 1692

Samuel Butler was the son of Deacon Richard Butler of Wethersfield, Connecticut and brother of Nathaniel Butler.  He followed his father in becoming a deacon of the church and served as an ensign of the town’s train band.  Butler was Wethersfield’s school master (1668) and selectman (1689).  At his death, he was owner of land “in the Indian purchase on the east side of the Great River in Wethersfield.”   William Richard Cutter, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, Vol. 2 (New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1913), 613.  James Hammond Trumbull, Memorial History of Hartford County, Connecticut, 1633-1884, Vol. 2 (Boston: Edward L.
