Beers, Richard, Capt., - 1675

Richard Beers immigrated to New England in 1635 and settled at Watertown, Massachusetts, where he kept an ordinary.  Beers represented Watertown to the General Court and was a town selectmen (1644-1675) and captain of the militia.  He served in the Pequot War and in King Philip’s War.  In the early fall of 1675, he led a company of soldiers from Hadley to help evacuate Northfield, but upon approach to the settlement, they were attacked.  Beers and several of his men were killed at Squakheage on September 4, 1675.  He was survived by a wife, Elizabeth Firman Beers, and several children.  Bodge, Soldiers in King Philip’s War, 127-133.  Warren, Connecticut Unscathed, 55-56, 125.
