Allumps
Allumps (alias Hyams, James) was born of a Narragansett father and a Cowesit mother and lived as a young man with the Narragansett at Pawtuckquachooge. Because of a quarrel, he, his brother Mashanshawitt (bc. 1643), and Aguntus removed to the Quinebaug Country with the assistance their cousin Uncas. There he lived at the fortified village of Egunk as one of the community’s leaders. In 1659 Allumps sold a large part of Quinebaug (450 square miles) to John Winthrop, Jr., John Endicott, and other Massachusetts Bay men, an act which brought reproach from both Uncas and Aguntus.
