Memorial of the Pequot Indians

To the Honorable the Governor, Council, and Representatives in General Court, assembled at Hartford, May the 13th Anno Domini 1725

We, the underwritten Pequot Indians, do petition and pray this Court that, whereas, Captain James Avery was by the Court appointed to be our overseer, formerly to take care of us and to inform the Court of the wrongs and abuses which we may be liable to sustain, and now, by reason of his age, is not able to afford us that help and counsel, which otherwise he might have done).  Therefore, we humbly pray that this Honorable Court would put in our good and faithful friend Deacon James Morgan of Groton in Captain Avery’s room, that he may take care of us, to see that we be not wronged, and to inform this Court of the wrongs and abuses which we may be liable to sustain, and to afford us all that counsel and direction which may be needful for us.  We would also inform this Court that we are all well-satisfied and contented about our lands.  We have seventeen hundred acres of land, well-secured to us by Groton, which is sufficient for us.  We also desire that our deeds be recorded in the colony records for our security and our children after us, and your petitioners shall ever pray.
