Petition of Benjamin Uncas Requesting a New Overseer

Unto the Honorable the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut New England

The petition of Benjamin Uncas, Sachem of Mohegan, in name and behalf of said tribe, humbly showeth that it has pleased God to take by death one of our overseers or guardians, Colonel Lynde of Saybrook, justly lamented by all who knew him, whose death is a loss to the colony in general and to our tribe in particular.  Our desire is that you would be pleased to continue your paternal care of us and nominate Captain Matthew Griswold of Lyme as one of our overseers in room of Colonel Lynde, deceased.  We hope he will be as acceptable to you as he is to us.  He is a humble gentleman and lives at no great  distance from us, and we are hopeful he will be serviceable to our tribe and also be pleased to order us a law book to be lodged with Robert Clelland, our present schoolmaster, to be read to us when proper, which law book we petitioned for last year.

May it, therefore, please the Honorable Assembly to appoint Captain Griswold of Lyme to be one of our overseers in room of Colonel Lynde, deceased, and grant us a law book, and your petitioners, etc.
