Letter from Thomas Wells on the Outrages Committed by Quinebaug Indians on the Nipmuc
These are to certify to those whom it may concern, that being desired to testify what I have taken notice of Tom Indian's behavior and manner of conversation, I can say thus much, that he was a fellow notoriously given to lying, to excessive drinking, accustomed to break promise and covenant, and to go away in debt, forward to swear in way of testimony for any if they pleased him by fair speech or in hopes of giving reward. In brief, a fellow very profane and of no conscience, absenting himself frequently from public ordinances.
There are others that have had more experience of him that can testify as appearing by their hands underwritten, not only the things aforesaid to be true but also that he hath been addicted to stealing and vehemently suspected of uncleanness, as also, some that report, that there hath been speeches coming from him to his purpose, that going to charge his gun and wanting to paper to ram in, he did tear a piece of the bible and should say he would make the word of God to fly.
