Pownall, Thomas, 1722 - 1805

Thomas Pownall was the son of William and Sarah Pownall of Lincoln, England.  A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he went to America as a secretary to the Governor of New York, a position that failed to materialize.  Pownall attended the Albany Conference in 1754, and from his observations proposed the establishment of a superintendency for Indian affairs supported by the crown.  He became the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey (1755-1757) and the Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay (1757-1760).  Wikipedia
