Captain Joseph Lothrop (1624-1702) was the son of Rev. John and Hannah Lothrop of London, England. He removed to New England by 1643 and settled at Barnstable, Massachusetts, where he served as a town clerk, deputy, member of the Council of War, and leader of the town's military. In his duties for the town, Lothrop was part of a committee to settle the land differences between Barnstable and the South Sea (Mashpee) Indians in 1657. He also was a witness to Kenecompsit's deed in 1675.
