Butler, Thomas Belden, 1806 - 1873
Born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Thomas Belden Butler graduated from Yale University medical school (1828) and commenced practice in Norwalk. He was elected member of House of Representatives (1832-1846). After studying law and being admitted to the bar (1837) he opened a practice in Norwalk. Butler served in the State senate (1847 and 1848) and was elected to the Thirty-first U.S. Congress (1849-1851). Afterward, Butler was appointed judge of the superior court (1855), associate justice of the Connecticut supreme court (1861), and chief justice nine years later.
